Signs Your Water Heater Needs to be Repaired or Replaced

Know the signs of a faulty hot water heater and be prepared with a solution!

A hot water heater is responsible for converting energy into heat and subsequently creating hot water for use throughout your home. A hot water heater is considered a plumbing fixture. The hot water heater in your home is working frequently to provide hot water to multiple areas in your home such as the shower, dishwasher, washer machine, and bathroom sink. The good news is that water heaters require little maintenance over the years, however like any plumbing fixture they can break and cause major problems. Here are six warning signs that your water heater may be on its way out.

Leaking Water

A leak in a hot water heater is typically not a good thing. It’s a very common sign that the entire tank needs to be replaced. If you notice water dripping from your water heater, it may just mean that connections are loose and need tightening. However, in most situations, it indicates that the entire tank is no longer functional. A plumber will be able to provide a professional opinion and recommendations on a leaking hot water heater. The best case scenario is that components need tightening or replacing. The worst-case scenario is that the entire fixture needs to be removed and replaced with a brand-new tank. The silver lining to the “worst case scenario” is that a new hot water heater can help save money with a newer, more efficient tank.

Its Age

Water heaters typically last anywhere from 8 to 12 years, depending on the type of water heater. It’s helpful to know the age of your water heater so you can keep an eye out for any warning signs of the tank failing. If you’re aware that your water heater is on the “older side” then you can prepare for the end of its life. Hot water heaters can be pricey to replace, so preparing for a financial setback is smart.

Quickly Running Out of Hot Water

Hot water heaters should be able to provide your home with hot water on demand. Of course, if the demand is long or nonstop it would be impossible not to eventually run out of hot water. But hot water heaters should be able to serve your home with hot water for a good amount of time. So if you’re noticing that you’re running out of hot water faster than usual, you might want to consider looking at the overall health of your water heater. Running out of hot water quickly can be an indication that there is sediment taking up space in the tank. Getting the tank flushed can help break up and remove any sediment, which will hopefully lead to a solution.

Lower Water Pressure

If you’re experiencing low water pressure, you may have significant sediment buildup in your hot water heater and connections. Sediment builds up faster with low water pressure so it’s a problem that can worsen quickly. If you take care of it early, you may be able to extend the life of your unit.

Discolored Water Coming From Faucets

You may notice your water has an off-looking color. If your water is looking foggy or has a gross tint to it when you call for hot water then that could be corrosion occurring within your tank and its components. In this case, it’s best to call a plumber to come out and take a look at your hot water heater and the involved piping.

Unusual Noises Coming From Your Water Heater

Strange sounds coming from plumbing fixtures and appliances in your home can be a sign that things are not working the way they should be. There are a few things that could be causing abnormal sounds from your hot water heater, such as clogging from sediment or mineral deposits, a change in water flow or pressure, loose connections, and broken valves. All of these possibilities can lead to a big problem with the heating element. Don’t ignore the unusual noises, hire someone trustworthy to make sure your hot water heater element doesn’t break!

To be on the safe side, it’s recommended to get your water heater inspected by a professional at least once a year. A professional plumber can thoroughly inspect your home's hot water heater and identify any issues.
